For years now Haley Blais has organically grown an online community and reputation
for her witty commentary and self-deprecating/self-loving balladry sung out in operatic
crescendos. Her powerful voice and astounding knack for melodic detail flourished on
her breakout 2020 debut Below The Salt which garnered millions of streams worldwide
and critical acclaim from i-D, NPR, CBC, Talkhouse, Nylon, FLOOD, Vancouver Sun
and more.
Earlier this year we saw Haley at her most personal and vulnerable with the single
“Coolest fucking bitch in town”, which quickly became a fan-favourite singalong as she
toured across North America with indie-pop darlings Peach Pit, and headlined
Vancouver’s Khatsahlano Festival. Continuing the theme of heartbreaking honesty
comes her new single and video, “Survivor’s Guilt” out on Tiny Kingdom.
Of the new track, Haley comments, “Survivor’s Guilt” puts us at the scene of the crime
where everything fell apart: the death of the family dog. I originally wrote it as this sad
piano ballad, but David Vertesi (Producer) shifted the song towards something more
summery and upbeat, contrasting the song’s stark lyrics and showcasing a sweltering
slide guitar a la the style of Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do”. As we get older, inevitably
we’ll lose things that are important to us. And when those losses come out of decisions,
sometimes you can’t help but blame yourself. Sometimes the death of a childhood dog
bursts up out of you, representing so much more than a dog, representing nothing more
than a dog.”
You can catch Haley at some of the Pacific North West’s most exciting festivals this
summer:
July 23 - Constellation Festival, Squamish BC (Black Pumas, July Talk, Andy Shauf)
Aug 27 - Thing Festival, Port Townsend WA (Modest Mouse, Father John Misty, Jose
Gonzalez)
